Teacher of the Year 2005 |
Tracy Wientjes of Onida, SD has been selected as South Dakota Ag In The Classroom's "2005 Teacher of the Year." Tracy was chosen from a field of graduates of our 2004 Summer Ag Institute.
Tracy has been teaching for 15 years and currently teaches 2nd grade at the A-B-O School in Onida. Tracy incorporates agriculture in all subject areas—whenever and wherever it fits. Her curriculum and activities have been linked to South Dakota State Education Standards for math, science, social studies and language arts. Throughout the 2004-2005 year, Tracy kept an Ag In The Classroom scrapbook to record what students learned.
To begin her "Ag Year", Tracy asked her students: "What is Agriculture?" Her goal was to provide activities and lessons to help students gain and understanding of how important agriculture really is to our life and the community. Activities range from BEEF-O Bingo—understanding what beef cattle are used for—to Wheat Weaving and Bread in a Bag to a Dairy unit showing all the different products.
"Having grown up on a farm, it is just great to be excited about agriculture again!"
