Teacher of the Year 2004 |
Marquette Brink of Onida, SD has been selected as South Dakota Ag In The Classroom's "2004 Teacher of the Year." Marquette was chosen from a field of graduates of our 2003 Summer Ag Institute.
Marquette has been teaching for seven years and currently teaches 4th grade at the A-B-O School in Onida. One hour each week is set aside for agriculture curriculum, however, Marquette also incorporates agriculture in all subject areas. Her curriculum and activities have been linked to South Dakota State Education Standards for math, science, social studies, reading and language arts. Throughout the 2003-2004 year, Marquette kept an Ag In The Classroom scrapbook to record what students learned.
To begin the year, Marquette asked her students: "What is Agriculture?" Her goal is to provide activities and lessons to help students gain and understanding of how agriculture affects our daily lives and to realize the diversity of South Dakota’s agriculture. Activities range from the types of crops grown to livestock raised to the equipment and technology that are part of today's agriculture. The lessons culminated with the students attending the Pierre Chamber Agri-Interest Committee's "Ag Field Day" in March.
Marquette noted, "Going on the field trip helped the students get a hands-on look at crops and livestock, and gain a better understanding of what we have been learning all year."
