Teacher of the Year 2003 |
Carla Clark has been selected as SD Ag in the Classroom's "2003 Teacher of the Year." Carla was born and raised on a farm in Frederick, SD and currently lives in Bristol with her husband Dave.
Carla is a graduate of Ag in the Classroom's 1999 Summer Ag Institute and the 2002 Advanced summer Ag Institute. Her overall goal is to incorporate ag-related activities into the curriculum to both enhance the curriculum and aid in meeting the state standards. In addition, she wants to help children realize the importance agriculture plays in all of our lives. After all, "There's just no way to have an AG-less day!"
This fall Carla began teaching fifth grade at Simmons Elementary School in Aberdeen, SD. Prior to teaching at Simmons, she taught a combination third and fourth grade classroom at Bristol Elementary in Bristol, SD.
Some of the activities Carla has completed with her students include creating edible cells, extracting DNA from bananas, creating Farm Charms, ice cream in a bag, bread in a bag, tortillas in a bag, making pizza, and SD sandwiches. Students have also enjoyed guest speakers about how farming has changed over the years, how soil is tested for nutrients, the various products we get from beef, and the importance of getting rid of weeds in fields. In addition, they have learned a great deal from field trips to the local elevator, fertilizer plant, seed business, greenhouse, local beekeeper, ethanol plant, and dairy farm.
