What is Agriculture in the Classroom? |
Ag In The Classroom is a nationwide program designed to help students develop an awareness and understanding of our food and fiber system, and how agriculture impacts our daily lives. By helping today's youth understand the nation's most important industry, it will lead to a better informed public tomorrow — a public that is agriculturally literate.
South Dakota Ag in the Classroom is a grassroots organization
that helps students across the state develop an awareness and
appreciation of the importance of agriculture in our society. SD
AITC was initiated in 1982 and incorporated in 1986.
The nationwide program of AITC was established in 1981. In 1981, Secretary of Agriculture John Block asked a group of elementary students where food came from. Without hesitation, the students replied that food came from grocery stores. Secretary Block went back to USDA in Washington D.C. and initiated the AGRICULTURE IN THE CLASSROOM project to help our nation’s young people understand the real source of their food and fiber, and the system that brings it to their tables.
South Dakota's non-profit corporation provides K – 12 teachers with
information and materials to help incorporate agriculture related
information into core subjects taught in South Dakota schools.
Currently, SD AITC provides graduate level agriculture literacy
courses for South Dakota teachers; in-service and pre-service
training to acquaint classroom teachers with Ag in the Classroom (AITC)
resources; “Mission Agriculture” Ag Mag to third and fourth grade
students statewide; and access to resources, lesson plans,
technology resources, websites and science activities and
experiments for teachers.
